Starcross’d is featured in the May issue of EventDV magazine!! And we were all so excited to discover that we were also featured on the cover (special thanks to Brian Abiva Photography for producing such cool photos)!

And a big thank you goes to Editor-in-Chief Stephen Nathans-Kelly for deciding to do this piece on our studio, and to Elizabeth Avery Merfeld for writing an awesome article. It’s a real honor!

Here’s a link to read the article:

To complement the piece, we were asked to create a short “how to” video on the making of our concept film, Sin City Love Story. So in the spirit of Robert Rodriguez, I created a 5-Minute Film School and an All Green Screen Version! You can view these featurettes on the above link or on vimeo here:

differences \\ tiffany + harvey’s same-day edit

by: Chris Dumlao   |  No Comments

We drove up to Hollywood last weekend to film Tiffany and Harvey’s wedding with the venues starting at the grand Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown, Los Angeles… and ending at the Sheraton Universal in Universal Studios, Hollywood.  Both these venues, to say the least, was both breathtaking and overwhelming!  They were both beautiful locations to have a wedding ceremony and reception!

And although same-day edits can be quite stressful to put together at times, the view I had sitting atop the Sheraton Universal overlooking the Universal Studios backlot was worth it all.  Very inspiring!

And for those Conan O’Brien fans out there, I swear we caught a tram tour driving off the lot and heading towards the streets that day.  Circle!  Circle!  Circle!

concept film \\ a sin city love story

by: Chris Dumlao   |  (7) Comments

When Maeden & Derwyn approached us regarding the treatment for their concept film, they had only two specific directions:  make it fun and hilarious!  And we were definitely aiming for that when producing this larger-than-life, unique tale of Sin City.

A lot of creativity was put in to achieving this visual look – definitely not the easiest project we have done.  But certainly a whole lot of fun putting together!

SynopsisLieutenant Derwyn and his ragtag group of detectives is solving an unusual crime that somehow has him involved. All the while, clues left from the crime scene stir up memories from his once-romantic past. He suspects that the mystery to this crime may lead him to the girl he once loved and lost. But how will they both resolve the fact that they are now opposite sides of the law?

Afterthought:  Maeden and Derwyn are only a few years younger than me.  And I have known them both since they were in high school.  When I got the call from Derwyn asking for our video services for their wedding, I was genuinely elated for them.  The movie starts off with the caption “10 years ago.”  This number was intentional because it truly is the length of time that they have been together.  I asked them what it was that kept their relationship intact for all these years.  They said that “humor”, along with the love/support from their family and friends, played a big part in their years together.

I have had the pleasure to have known Jhulie and Jeremy for the past few months.  Since our first meeting in 2008, we’ve seen each other several times – during their engagement photo session, interviewing for their photo montage, and other meetings to discuss cinematography for their special day.  And I’m sure everyone who has ever known Jhulie and Jeremy  can agree with me by saying that it is not difficult at all to fall in love with these two.  They seriously make “romance” look easy.

These two high school sweethearts enamored their guests last weekend with a ceremony and reception straight out of Platinum Weddings.  That first step in to their reception hall at the Westin San Diego took my breath away – the details, the lighting – exquisite.

Capture the romance in their emotional same-day edit below, and then follow the history of Jhulie & Jeremy in their photo montage!

eagle ridge \\ yvonne + bill’s wedding trailer

by: Chris Dumlao   |  (2) Comments

Our first wedding of 2009 was held in Gilroy, California.  And what a way to start off our year than at the beautiful Eagle Ridge Resort with gorgeous, majestic views of the golf course!  The trees were all reddish-brown, and leaves sprinkled across the ground from winter.  It was simply breathtaking and such an intimate setting.

And for those who know of our obsession admiration of all things Apple Inc., you would understand how much we appreciated all the Apple products featured at Yvonne & Bill’s wedding – especially the rows of MacBook Photo Booth stations that took photos of each of their guests, printed out from a Polaroid printer, and placed in to their very own individual coasters.  The surprise appearance of the iPhones during the ceremony was also classic!  And Bill & Yvonne’s sweet dance moves, kissing games, scavenger hunt… so many favorite moments from that day!

Overall, it was a fun road trip for us, and a wonderful experience getting to film both Yvonne and Bill’s families – definitely good motivation for the rest of our year.  And despite the warnings from people, the garlic smell of Gilroy was actually quite nice.  :P

viva la cruz! \\ adrienne + noel’s same-day edit

by: Chris Dumlao   |  (3) Comments

For our last wedding weekend of 2008, it was appropriate for Adrienne & Noel’s priest to remind us all of why we have the privilege of “marriage.”  And that is because God created us to love.. and to be “one” with Him as a married couple.  And with any relationship, we cannot function without Him.

The Ocampo-Cruz family definitely understands the meaning of marriage and God’s love.  Many of their relatives and guests are married over 30 years, and a handful are happily married over 50 years!  These couples were the perfect example of a lasting marriage and true love.

Thank you Adrienne & Noel, and Congratulations again!  May God bless you both with a long and loving marriage.

crush \\ vivian + richard’s wedding trailer

by: Chris Dumlao   |  (9) Comments

The day of Vivian and Richard’s wedding was probably the hottest day of the summer!  So hot, in fact, that Vivian’s bridesmaid really just had to dip her feet in the pool at USD.  The fans and umbrellas also seemed to be the appropriate accessory for the photo shoot.

Just as most traditional Vietnamese wedding rituals go, Richard and his family approached the bride’s house to prove his “worthiness” to her family as a husband to Vivian.  And what was the final password that got him through the door?  $88.88 – the number 8 being symbolic to “infinity,” I’m sure.

Bernie and Melissa’s story was a romance written on the dance floor.  They met and danced together with the 220 dance group, and even had the current team perform an all out, high-powered performance during the reception.  The day was an emotional beginning with an energetic end.  The final DVD is going to be so much fun to watch.  ;)

Congratulations Bernie and Mel!

breathless \\ kathy + rodney’s wedding trailer

by: Chris Dumlao   |  (4) Comments

From the moment I heard this song, I just knew that I had to use it for Rodney and Kathy, so I quickly put together this wedding trailer for them.

It’s probably because of the way Kat was breathing heavily in anticipation as she walked down the aisle.  Or the way Rodney seemed to be holding his breath as he watched his soon-to-be wife approach the altar.  It could even be because of their concept video where they lip synced all the songs – not a breath of song heard from their voices.  But in the boldest and sweetest gestures I’ve ever witnessed, Rodney went up on stage at the reception and actually began to serenade his wife… to one of the most difficult songs to sing to, might I add.  She was breathless.

You just can’t help feel that way also when you see these two.
